Why make a day trip to Oak Park

Oak Park puts architecture and local history within reach of Chicago. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Home and Studio and Unity Temple anchor a visit focused on Prairie-style design, while the Ernest Hemingway Birthplace Museum offers another historic house stop.

You can make a shorter outing around one or two sites, or give the day more room for a walking tour and additional visits.

Oak Park is 11.3 miles by road from FOUND Hotels Chicago Series by Marriott, about a 21-minute drive. If you’re planning time in the city before or after the trip, this downtown Chicago itinerary and guide to Wicker Park cover other ways to spend your time.

How to get from Chicago to Oak Park

The CTA Green Line serves Oak Park and Ridgeland stations, running between Harlem/Lake in Forest Park and the South Side through downtown and the Loop.

The Blue Line also serves Oak Park on its Forest Park branch, with service between O’Hare and Forest Park via downtown. For a train option, Metra’s Union Pacific West Line connects Chicago OTC with Oak Park.

If you take the Green Line, Oak Park station is at 100 S. Oak Park Ave. and connects with Pace bus 311. The Green Line map also shows a connection between Harlem/Lake and Metra’s UP-W Oak Park station.

CTA’s Green Line directions for Unity Temple say to travel westbound to Oak Park Avenue, then walk north on Oak Park Avenue and west on Lake Street; that walk takes 5–10 minutes.

Metra trains have specific departure times, so plan around the schedule for your travel day. The Green Line’s weekday service from Harlem toward Cottage Grove runs from 3:45 a.m. to 12:45 a.m.; on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, it runs from 4:45 a.m. to 12:45 a.m. The CTA Blue Line provides service at all times, every day.

Architecture and historic house visits

Architecture and historic house visits

Start with the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio at 951 Chicago Avenue. Wright lived and worked there from 1889 to 1909, developing design concepts; he and his associates also developed Prairie-style architecture at the site. The Trust’s tour combines a guided visit inside with an outdoor, self-guided audio tour of the surrounding historic district.

Unity Temple, at 875 Lake Street, adds a second Wright-designed site. Built in 1905–08, it is described by the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust as Wright’s only surviving public building from his Prairie period and is inscribed on the World Heritage List. You can choose a 45-minute guided interior tour for $20 or a 45-minute self-guided audio tour for $18.

For more architecture on foot, the Chicago Architecture Center’s Oak Park walking tour passes nearly a dozen Prairie-style homes along Chicago and Forest avenues and Elizabeth Court. It lasts one hour and follows a paved, flat, step-free route described as fully accessible. The meeting point is the northwest corner of Woodbine Avenue and Chicago Avenue.

The Ernest Hemingway Birthplace Museum, at 339 N. Oak Park Avenue, adds a literary-history stop. It is six blocks north of the CTA Green Line stop on North Oak Park Avenue.

Pleasant Home, at 217 Home Ave., was designed in 1897 by George W. Maher for John and Mamie Farson. The visitor listing describes the 30-room house as having stained-glass windows and a large fireplace.

Planning stops, meals and walking time

Planning stops, meals and walking time

Keep the day organized around the sites you most want to enter. The Home and Studio tour already includes an outdoor audio tour of the surrounding historic district, while the Architecture Center walk groups several Prairie-style homes into a one-hour route.

Unity Temple is another guided or audio-tour option; adding the Hemingway museum or Pleasant Home means accounting for their separate visiting hours.

The Village of Oak Park provides an official historic-landmarks map as a PDF. It can help you orient yourself between historic sites and plan a walking sequence. Pleasant Home’s listed tours are self-guided or guided, and its visitor listing says advance reservations are not required.

Tickets, hours and advance planning

The Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio lists tours daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the shop open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $24–$38, depending on the tour selected. Unity Temple tours run Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.; the site is closed on Sunday.

The Hemingway Birthplace Museum’s regular public hours are Thursday and Friday from 1–5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m.–5 p.m., and Sunday from 1–5 p.m. Its winter schedule, from December 1 through March 15, keeps the Thursday, Friday and Saturday hours but closes on Sunday.

Admission is $20 for adults, $18 for seniors age 65 and older, and $18 for youth age 18 or younger and college students with valid ID. Children under 10 enter free with an adult. Tours start at the top of each hour, with the last tour starting at 4 p.m.; advance reservations are recommended.

Pleasant Home offers tours on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check the official site before you go for current transit schedules, alerts, tour times and ticket details.

A sample half-day or full-day route

For a half-day, take transit to Oak Park and build the visit around the Home and Studio tour, including its outdoor historic-district audio tour. If the timing works, add Unity Temple, allowing 45 minutes for either tour format and a 5–10-minute walk from the Green Line stop to the temple.

For a fuller day, begin with the Home and Studio, then join the one-hour Architecture Center walking tour. Add Unity Temple or the Hemingway Birthplace Museum according to the hours on your chosen day; for the Hemingway museum, leave enough time to catch a tour that starts on the hour.

Pleasant Home is another option on Thursday. Check train schedules before settling on your order, especially if you plan to travel by Metra.
